Introduction
There was a woman who was about entering a boat with her little boy of five years old. The child sighted two boats that were readily available, and then told her mum that they shouldn't enter the bigger boat because he knew the owner- his boat always capsized (keel over) killing alot of lives. However, the woman heeded her son's advice, and then both of them entered the smaller boat. In the middle of their journey, there was a fierce storm, and the sailor, piloting the smaller boat began to pray: "The Lord of the seas, for your mercies, save us!" The passengers joined him in prayers, and the Lord saved them all, while the bigger boat with a large number of souls suffered the storm and perished because they were in a boat of an inexperienced sailor. In fact, they were in a wrong boat, none of them called on the name of Jesus Christ.
Our introductory passage has paved a way for us to grasp the hints about the storm that arose when Jesus Christ was with his disciples in a boat. From the scripture, Matthew 8:23-27, we have basic issues like:
- The disciples were with Christ in one boat (Matt. 8:23). This emphasizes the significant need for us to always draw near to Christ. If we can go anywhere with him, on the sea, road, home or school, anywhere we see a storm, he'll save us. A storm may arise against one's marriage or finance, the question is not only about who will savage you, but is are you with Jesus? Is Jesus with you in that little boat of your storm?
- A fierce storm struck the lake (verse 24): Satan may arise to attack a man either directly or indirectly. Job was a man Satan attacked both directly and indirectly. By direct attack we mean an express pain inflicted on man, which may be sickness, while indirect attack is an attack done to one's property or finance. Here job lost his property (indirect attack) and his children (direct attack) and when the storm was over, there was a double-fold restoration. Here, Satan caused the stormy weather as he did not have an access to attack the disciples, he used a fierce storm to strike the lake so that Jesus's disciples would suffer dangers and death, but he did not succeed because they were in Christ's boat. A storm may arise on one's business in such a way one may suffer it. It may arise in your marriage, like in the marriage of Manfred and Hippolita (by Wolpole Horace) trying to disorganised it, but do you in your marriage sit in the boat with Jesus Christ? I pray for people who are suffering from broken homes and marriages today, as you all sail in the same boat with Jesus, your storm is over.
- The disciples ran to Christ, and prayed for him to save them (verse 25): Jesus was very much close to them at this perilous time. The disciples knew quite well that Jesus Christ is very much able to deliver them out of the storm, and so they called on him, arousing his compassion, letting him know how miserable they would be if he would not save them. Though there was fear in them, and they were rebuked of this. Thus, fear no storm in your life, because there is a Lord who speaks the language a storm can hear and cease, his name is Jesus Christ. Call on him right now, no matter how fierce your storm may be, Jesus is mightier, and he'll save you. He spoke to the raging sea, and the wind obeyed him. Every storm in your life, let them hear the voice of Jesus and cease. That storm that has hindered you from progressing in life, let it cease. The storm that has brought you backward, let it hear the voice of Jesus and cease right now. Amen!
Matthew 8:23-27 New Living Translation (NLT)
Jesus Calms the Storm
23 Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. 24 Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. 27 The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”
