REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE

Remember Who You Are, a sermon preached by Fortune Nwaiwu


Introduction

A little girl grew under the care of her guardian, Janet, due to she had lost her father, an Anglican priest and her mum could not provide for the family. Before the death of her father, her father called Janet, her guardian, and handed her over to her to take care of her. As this little child was growing, she became very much acquainted with new modern technologies in her guardian’s house, and tended to live a luxurious life, using make ups, fixing her eye lashes, and fingernails. One day, as she dressed up for a night club, and it happened it was her first time to go for the club, Mrs. Janet sat her down and said, “Remember who you are. You were born to a Christian family, and bred in a Christian family too. Why do you tend to live a worthless life, a life that would never transform your spiritual life? How soon have you forgotten that you are a pastor’s child? You now wear trousers, artificial hair, fixing your eyelashes, and fingernails. Who would see you without the thought that you have completely spoiled? Though, if you can’t remember who you were before, know it now that you are a Christian, and therefore live a practical Christian life”.

Ifeoma felt like a needle has pierced her very soul. She quietly went inside her room, and thought about everything her guardian had said. She searched for her bible she had abandoned for a couple of years. She opened it, and it happened to be the book of Hebrews chapter 11:24-25 which she read:

“24 It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.”

She realised that she was enjoying fleeting pleasures of sin, she then undressed, and then put on her Christian cloth, and returned to her original life.
Brethren, my message today is to remind you who you are because if I fail to do so as a watchman, I’ll be responsible for your sins. When Moses enquired of God’s name, God says: “I am What I am” meaning that he's always a righteous, holy, compassionate, and faithful God who has all it takes to be the Lord of lords. He never changes. He remains forever. Thus, after reminding you of who you are, then you endeavour stitch to it.
Who are you?

• You are a child of God:

6 “And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” 7 Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

We are children of God, we should think, talk, behave, and appear like children of God. We should show a great reverence to him who shed his blood to redeem us from the power of sin. Now we are no longer a slave to sin but a heir to God. We’re no longer a slave to kill or hate, but a heir to love ourselves, no longer a slave to immoral life- fornications, cheating, worship of idols, but a heir to righteousness and holiness. This is who you are- a child of God, and therefore, run away from idol worship, serve God instead.

• You are the salt and the light of the world (Matt. 5:13-16).

Salt brings out the taste of food, and a good cook uses it for her meals, and without it there will always be a complaint that the meal is never a delicious one. This is a clear illustration about the Christians in the world. We are the salt, the cause of peace, unity and love in our neighbourhood. We shouldn’t lose this Christian quality. Even if it’s only you the upholder of the peace, between you and your neighbours, keep it on to retain your Christian quality. Also we are the lens through which the people of this world will see light. Jesus is the light, and we his followers are light as well. Be a light to everyone around you. Your light will shine to everyone, and no cloud of evil will cover your light. You are exalted beyond your contemporaries. Your potentials will not be hidden. As you are the light of the world, so let your good deeds shine to everyone around you. Sing this song with me:

Your light will shine, because you are a light to the world. 

May God be with you as you remember who you are today and turn to God.
