ARE YOU A LAZY CHRISTIAN?

₦Sermon 9
Sunday 25th /10/2015
( A Sermon Preached by Rev. Fortune Emerence Chinemerem Nwaiwu)

“Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically” – Romans 12: 11 NTL.

Beloved in Christ Jesus, our today’s homiletics comes in form of a question which should be meditated in your heart and come out with a reasonable answer. You know yourselves, you need to re-examine your Christian attitudes and worship and then evaluate your life whether you are a lazy Christian or not.

A lazy person can never attempt or dream of suffering in life, he that suffers not is prone to poverty. Apostle Paul encouraged the believers at Rome to work hard and serve God enthusiastically. He did not say that they should be working hard, engaging in business enterprises and then forget about serving their God. Besides, their income, what they earn from their business would also help in building up the church of God.  One thing is clear; they need to work hard as not to be a burden to people and secondly, as they struggle to eke out a living they should also serve their God diligently. They should not allow their business to take the position of God in their lives.

A lazy Christian does not do the work of God with enthusiasm; he always wants more rest, a little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest (see Prov. 24:33) and when this happens, poverty will pounce on him like a bandit, he will always beg for food because he is now experiencing scarcity of things –food, money. When someone begins to beg for food, at times, he will go in starvation when nobody gives him food.

A lazy Christian gives himself no time for prayer: Paul says be patient in trouble and keep on praying – Romans 12:12. Lazy people are impatient when there is trouble. They can never take their trouble to God in prayer. If nothing is done, such trouble may drown them to pity and death. Lazy Christians cannot fast as to punish the flesh; instead, they resort to meet prophets who could predict things for them and such predictions may not have solutions to their problems because they are weak in faith and very lazy to work out for their salvation. Apostle Paul advised the Philippians believers to work hard to show the result of their salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear” – Philippians 2:12. We have seen the evidence of what salvation produces in man as apostle Paul rightly said; obedience to God’s word, deep reverence to God, and fear of God. He that sets you free from the enslavement of sin requires your deep reverence unto him. Because of laziness and spiritual dullness, that is why most of those who claim to be Christians are not obeying God’s commandments. This is true because Satan has injected them with the spirit of laziness. To do good tidings unto people, they are lazy to do them, to love one another; they are lazy to do so. When one is lazy to love, the result is clear which hatred is.

A lazy Christen does not regularly keep the commandments of God. He is lazy to run away from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. He is a partaker of the evil happening in the society; he has not completely given his life to Christ. They are just like the five foolish virgins that waited for the bridegroom without extra oil. In the book of Gen. 2:15 we see that God put the man (Adam) in the Garden of Eden for him to tend and watch over it. Thus, Adam was a diligent and hardworking man who worked to tend the Garden that had been entrusted to him. But many Christians have left what has been given to them to watch over. Some people have been mandated to clean or sweep the temple of God but because of laziness, they abandoned it. What duty has been given to you in the church to do? Do you do it at the time it ought to be done? Do you know that the moment Adam left the garden with his wife there; it was the time that the vicious devil came to deceive his wife thereby causing then to disobey God.

A lazy man is not fit to learn a handiwork. He is not a business oriented man. The account of Matthew for the parable of the three servants in Matt. 25:26 indicates the kind of Christians who are diligent in serving God and the lazy Christians. They have reputation that their names are in the church register but they should weep because their laziness has taken off their names in the book of life. The master who has given three of his servants some money to run business said to one: “You wicked and lazy servant! – Matt.25:26. This shows that a lazy person is wicked.

Many lazy Christians have ruined the talents that have been bestowed upon them. No lazy person will receive blessings of God because they do not work for it. The master did not bless the lazy servant because he did not utilize his money well.  Therefore, beloved I pray to God that let anyone who works for him diligently eat from the bread of life.
